Hi Everyone,
I hope everyone is doing well. This pandemic has really changed our lives in so many ways. We have experienced ALOT together this year! Whew! We started the year by losing one of the greatest basketball players of our time Kobe Bryant. I remember growing up watching him play for the Lakers. I never had the opportunity to make it to a game. Now, I wish I did! His death was not only a loss to his family but a loss to the world. I remember being in the phillipines last year and seeing a philopino man wearing his jersey. The grieving of Kobe was not just national but international. He left behind a legacy to be proud of forsure!
After we grieved the death of Kobe. We went right into a global health crisis our country was not prepared for. The leadership in America updated us daily with press conferences on the status of the coronavirus crisis. Many of us grew anxious some depressed with the possibilty of contracting the virus or the possibility of losing our lives. The world slowly began to shut down and the news was reporting death tolls in the hundreds of thousands of people. Many people I know have contracted the virus and others has transitioned to the other side.
This years pandemic has caused many people to be out of work and left to survive off unemployment. Leaving people vulnerable unable to pay their bills and financially support themselves.
For myself depression, anxiety and uncertainty took over. I had to have a break up with travel and that broke my heart. I have lived in 2 different countries and traveled to multiple national and international destinations. I began to emotionally eat just to comfort myself and keep myself calm. I was confused on how the wealthiest country in the world (America) was breaking down.
As our goverments began to open the country back up civil unrest was sparked because a unarmed Black Man by the name of George Floyd was killed by the police. Mr. Floyd was video taped and continuously said, “I cant breathe” and he was ignored by the police who are here to protect and serve. Living as a Black woman or man in America is unsafe. Any time police come around you get anxiety because of all the injustices we’ve witness on the news, social media and personally experienced. As a Black woman currently living in America I took this really hard. I have Black brothers, cousins, uncles, co-workers and friends.
As the year continued we witnessed more death and police brutality towards blacks. Then, here comes civil unrest again! People were extremely outraged by the Breonna Taylor case.Breonna Taylor a Black woman sleeping in her bed and the Police start shooting from outside into the wrong home. People went to the streets once again marching for justice wanting to be heard. I believe the marches were so large because the people were tired and they are still tired. Lock down, public health crisis, loss of jobs, potential loss of home and loss of friends and family.
Lastly, we had a election and tensions were high throughout the entire election. Americans have been through alot over the year and are pretty fed up and fustrated. Currently, we are under another shutdown more people out of work, more businesses closed, schools are back closed and people emotions are all over the place. To say the least if your not ok..its OKAY! We’ve experiencd alot this year but we survived it ALL.
If you need to talk to someone call a friend or schedule an appointment with a therapist. We all are going through some type of change and need support. Never be afraid to reach out to get the help that you need. During these times self-care is essential. I have incorporated alot of new practices in my life such as meditation, reading my daily devotional, exercise (daily walks for and hour or the gym for 30 minutes of cardio) and journaling. I now have a daily routine and a evening routine to keep myself calm and peaceful. I deactivated my social media for a month so I wouldn’t get bombardrd with all the negativity. I started reading a book called the 40 day prayer challenge that really helped get me through.
I pray that if you are reading this that you and your family are healthy and safe. I know it’s not easy but we all will get through this. Ive talked to alot of seniors latley 80+ and they tell me stories of how they got through the vietnam war, civil rights movement and that gives me hope. Take as much time as you need then when your ready, pray and start moving your life forward. The country needs you. Your family and friends need you. God needs you to keep loving and helping others. This too shall pass and everything will be okay. Remember we have the victory over it all. As I always say, OUR BEST DAYS are ahead. Love you Guys! Stay Encouraged! The Best is yet to come for all of our lives! No weapon formed against us shall prosper.
