Why I Left Corporate American to Live Abroad!

By now many of you know I LEFT America in 2019. I do not regret it. Honestly, I’m on the verge of leaving again. Now, I remember why I left Corporate America and American society.

People make assumptions to why I left. I was “running from something”. Which is partially true. I was walking away from America’s oppressive and discriminatory society.

Let me take you back to my life before 2019. I was working 14-16 hours a day. Yes, 14-16 hours a day. I worked every holiday and most weekends. I didn’t have a life. As a single woman living in Florida life can get pricey with just meeting your basic needs. I was over it! Over the overtime. Over the stress of not feeling like I was getting ahead. Literally, OVER the rat race!

As a 33 year old black single woman I had graduated community college, earned a bachelors degree, got licensed to sale Real Estate and I still didn’t feel like I was getting ahead. I also tried multiple entrepreneurship ventures. Ya girl was TIRED! Until this day I still can’t believe how we were lied to about the steps to becoming successful and achieving the American dream.

Working in Corporate America I was bullied and harassed not only because I was a black woman but because I am a over achiever. I don’t believe over achievers should ever be in Corporate America. They just need mediocre employees who do the minimum to get by. They only pay you enough to get by. Sad truth! I was tired of being looked over and feeling like I wasn’t enough. I remember one time I had exceeded job expectations and was demoted. My Caucasian co-worker was promoted and I did all the work (stayed late, came in early). Worst things has happened to me in Corporate I’ll elaborate on those in my book. I was TIRED! Nothing I did created stability or upward mobility in the workplace.

My social life was great. I always managed to have amazing supportive women around me in each stage of my life and Great family support!

Something just was not clicking. I love to travel and I was watching a YouTube video about how the cost of living was so much cheaper in Thailand compared to the US. This youtuber showed his $250/month brand new condo in a high rise building. I was in disbelief! I decided right then we were being overcharged in America and maybe my “American dream” is in another country. I start doing my research on potential job opportunities and came across Teaching English. I needed a way to earn income and be able to travel abroad and this was it! I put a plan together and within months I booked a one way ticket and I was OUT! I’ll tell you more about the process in my e-book coming out later this year. I’ll teach you the exact side hustles I worked to help earn additional income. I’ll also teach you how I saved and budgeted my life to be able to travel and live abroad for a year. Best year of my life! I’ll tell you more details about my year abroad in future blogs.

I’m glad I returned last November because the corona virus hit. I’m currently back in the rat race of Corporate America leveraging the income until I’m able to fully launch and grow my business ventures successfully on my own. With GOD all things are possible I plan and pray to be out of Corporate America FOR GOOD by December 2021.

I am so happy and grateful for the opportunity I had to travel the world freely for a year. I can’t imagine what travel will be like moving forward. Which reminds me of another lie we are taught. Work 20 years retire and travel. Unfortunately, people are retiring everyday now and no one can travel. My advice do what makes you happy now tomorrow and travel is not guaranteed for later. We for sure learned that this year! As I always say our best days are ahead. Stay Blessed and Encouraged!
