BLACK WOMAN IN HONG KONG!

Last year I went to Hong Kong!! I remember last year like it was yesterday!!! I lived my BEST LIFE traveling the world. How did I get so blessed to go to Hong Kong a place that people dream of! I OWE it ALL to GOD! All GOD! His grace and his mercy. Being that we are in a pandemic and are unable to travel internationally make you look back and be grateful for the times you could. That’s right ladies and gentlemen me, Keyaria Crider!!!! I was in Hong Kong!!! Since I was a little girl I’ve always heard about Hong Kong, but never thought I would actually travel there. Growing up my family traveled within the states we didn’t do any international traveling. This was a true blessing for me, a black girl from a small town in the mid west in Hong Kong.

I flew from Thailand to Hong Kong. At that time I was living in Bangkok, Thailand. The flight was about 2 1/2 hours which wasn’t long at all. I was amazed at the beautiful mountains on the island as I landed. When I got off the plane I noticed the air quality was different, the air quality was alot better then Bangkok (huge city). I exchanged money and went to find the train station. 1 usd for 7 Hong Kong Dollars. The exchange rate was not the best considering I lived in Thailand 1 usd for 31 thai baht. I got to the train and it was 115 Hong Kong dollars and a free shuttle ride to the hotel. When I arrived at the hotel I saw the coolest red old school taxis!  I stayed at the Marriot on the highest floor with a beautiful floor to ceiling window view of the entire Harbor and HONG KONG syline! Downstairs underground the hotel was a HUGE mall with shopping, restaurants and at the end of the mall was the train staion. That was soooo convenient!

I was so excited to be in Hong Kong! I immediately went to sightsee. The train takes you to different parts of Hong Kong. There is a map that shows all the different destinations. The city was so clean and beautiful. That night I went out to experience the night life in a club district. I negotiated a rate with the taxi ( in foreign countries you can negotiate rates) There are a few street filled with bars and clubs ranging from techno music to hip hop. The local hong kongers were having a blast dancing in the streets and club hopping. The clubs didn’t close until 4am so it was a late fun night on the club strip. I definitely recommend checking out the club district for live music and fun.

The following morning, I wanted to go sighteeing again. I didn’t have a plan as to where I wanted to go, so I headed to back to the train station. I decided on seeing one of the temples, and then get on the peak tram that takes you to the upper level of Hong Kong Island and you can see the entire city I’m all about the views! To my disappointment the peak tram was under construction for the weekend and I was not able to ride. I headed to see the temple. I ended up getting lost in the city looking for the temple. I stopped and grabbed a bite to eat and continued to walk down the beautiful streets of Hong Kong. As I was walking I noticed a parade. There were a few bands and a ton of different social humanitarian activist walking in what I thought was a parade. Come to find out I was walking in the middle of a protest. Later, I returned to the room for a nap when I woke from my nap I looked out the window and saw thousands of people on the streets. It was another PROTEST! The Hong Kong people were marching for their rights dressed in all black. They were protesting in the mall connected to the Marriot hotel I was staying at. They were protesting EVERYWHERE! It was actually one of the most peaceful protests I’ve every witnessed. I didn’t feel threatened or in harms way. I actually stood next to a asian couple and watched the protest for an hour. I was grateful they spoke english and explained to me what was happening.

As a Black women who solo traveled the world I loved Hong Kong. I felt safe and free to be able to roam the island with no judgement or discrimination. Many times I was lost (haha most of the time I was lost), but the people guided me in the right direction. The food was great, people were kind, lots of attractions to see, transportation was easy to access buses, trains, taxis. I loved the scenery and I can’t wait to visit again after covid-19 crisis is over.

If you ever get the oppurtunity to visit Hong Kong GO!!! You will absolutely love it! Our BEST days are ahead and we will be back traveling the world soon. Keep your head up! Stay positive and watch youtube travel videos until we are safe to travel abroad again!
