Have you ever thought of staying at a hostel? If you’re like me and are use to fancy or private room hotels a hostel would be out of the question. You wouldn’t fathom living in a dorm room with 6 random females and your over the age of 30. I decided if I am going to travel, I’m going to have to save on accomandations (because that’s where most of your money goes). I choose to stay at a hostel to lower the cost and I saved quite a bit of money.

The hostel I choose was Mad Monkey hostel Chaing Mai, Thailand. I choose this hostel because it was inexpensive around $12usd a night. I stayed there 5 nights which costed me $65usd. In the states you would pay well over $500 for a 5 night stay at any hotel (even a cheap motel). I saved well over $400. I also choose the hostel because it had some really awesome reviews. I did notice it was a party hostel, but what a great way to get to meet more solo travelers who are just like me. Lastly, I choose this hostel because of the location. It’s right around the corner from hard rock cafe, local night markets (clothes, thai massages, street food, souviner shops) local and international restaurants, internet cafes, bars, tourist temples currency exchanges, and everything is walking distance from the hostel.
The accomadations were as aspected for a 6 bedroom dormstyle room. We each had bunks that were numbered. When I arrived and checked in, I was given a towel and a key to my locker in the dorm room. I had to put down a deposit of 500 baht for the towel and locker key to make sure it was returned at the end of my stay. I had a large piece of luggage that would not fit in the locker, so I placed it in the closet down stairs next to the front desk. They allowed us to place larger luggage bags there if we didn’t feel comfortable leaving it in the room.
I met alot of different girls from various geographical locations, ethnicities and social economic status. I enjoyed connected and getting to know each of them and their story. What we all had in common is the love for travel and the desire for freedom.
They have a standard fitness area with a treadmill and free weights.

The sitting area was pretty popular. There were bean bag chairs, people relaxing, meeting others and some were even sleep in this area.

The pool wasn’t being used by many. Yet, it was very clean and was going to be used for the pool party. I missed the pool party while staying there, but I heard it was a great time.

There is a restaurant inside the hostel. I drank smoothies for breakfast that cost me 100 baht, and they gave us a free drink ticket we could get between 6pm-630pm. The restaurant food included some westernized food and thai food to accomadate for the all guests. Food ranged from 150-180 baht. There was also a pool table and music playing in the evening. You can get local street thai food for about 20-40 baht right around the corner from the hostel.

One of the great things about the hostel was they offered a trips and tours advisor (who signed you up and organized the trips). If your new to Thailand like me, this would be a great place to find things to do. Each day the hostel had a trip or event planned. They had trios to the Elephants Santuary, Game nights, pool parties, and Pub Crawl just to name a few.

Transportation to the hostel was easy from the airport. I paid 200 baht to the taxi company at the airport to take me to the hostel. Getting around in Chaing Mai wasn’t difficult at all. There are five forms of transportation. Tuk Tuks which will cost you around 100-150 bhat, red shared cab 30 baht, grab is like uber service in the states, local taxis or walk. I’ve done a combination of all of them. It just depends on where your going. All in All I enjoyed my stay at the Mad Monkey Hostel Chaing Mai, Thailand.
